My family got out of town for spring break in April and the time spent away with my girls was fantastic. In the middle of all the work, rest and more, I’ve been racking up a lot of miles in preparation for an upcoming marathon. I also found time to catch the documentary about Jason Isbell, Running With Our Eyes Closed. More on that in a minute.

Running With Our Eyes Closed and Open

As I sit down to write this, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are playing from the speaker nearest me. I’d only ever known him as the guy from Drive-By Truckers, but I caught the documentary about his life on Max this past weekend and found it remarkable.

The biopic covered his quick rise into Drive-by Truckers from a substitute guitarist to one of their main song writers, his descent into addiction and his path out of it. With careful attention to the relationships that formed him, the movie gave a raw glimpse into his life with lots of memories about the early days of quarantine that had us all wondering about our futures.

Somewhere in the middle of it Isbell said “I don’t look at something and think ‘this is going to be difficult.’ I just think, ‘is this worth doing or not? Is it better for us to do this as a team?”

The world of alternative investing has a lot of nuance inside of it - different structures, waterfalls, subscription documents, data reconciliation. It’s pretty easy to sit back and think “this is going to be difficult” - too difficult. But for those of us who have walked into the wonderful world of investments outside the public market (where an estimated $24.4 trillion dollars of capital is already invested), the real question is “Is this worth doing or not?”

It’s fairly universally agreed to by now that alternative investments behave differently than typical equities and bonds - that their addition in a client portfolio can help lower volatility, provide broader diversification, and most likely enhance returns. Those ideas are all easy to say yes to.

The manual, time intensive labor involved with communicating the opportunity, filling out subscription documents and maintaining that investment position are not quite so easy to evaluate. Every day I talk to wealth management firms who are attempting to keep up with their clients’ alternatives who are trying to keep it all straight with very little reassurance that the data are right.

I had the honor to attend the Family Wealth Awards, and although we did not bring home a win this year, it was an honor to have been nominated and spend the evening among those solving the problems our industry faces.
